If you are looking for a spacious, stylish, and eco-friendly SUV with plenty of driving pleasure and a low running cost, you might want to check out the MG EHS PHEV. This is the second model from MG in Europe, following the fully electric MG ZS EV. The MG EHS plug-in hybrid SUV combines a turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and a 16.6 kWh battery, allowing it to travel up to 52 km on electric power alone (WLTP). The best part is that it comes with a new super sharp price that makes it one of the most affordable plug-in hybrid SUVs on the market.
What is the MG EHS PHEV?
The MG EHS is a plug-in hybrid SUV based on the MG HS, a petrol-powered SUV that is sold in China and some other markets. The MG EHS plug-in hybrid SUV results from an investment from the SAIC Motor Corporation, the Chinese company that owns the MG brand. SAIC Motor is one of China's largest car manufacturers and strongly focuses on electrification and innovation.
The MG EHS PHEV is designed to appeal to customers who want a practical, comfortable, and safe SUV that can also reduce their environmental impact and fuel consumption. The MG EHS has a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and comes with an extensive range of comfort and safety features, such as bi-functional LED headlights, panoramic glass sunroof, 360-degree camera, dual-zone climate control, heated leather seats, navigation, rearview camera with parking sensors, rain sensor, keyless entry, and a leather steering wheel. It also has the MG Pilot driver assistance system, which includes adaptive cruise control, automatic high beam, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and more.
How does the MG EHS PHEV work?
The MG EHS uses a hybrid powertrain that consists of a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine, an electric motor, and a 16.6 kWh lithium-ion battery. The petrol engine produces 162 hp and 250 Nm of torque, while the electric motor delivers 122 hp and 230 Nm of torque. Together, they provide a system output of 258 hp and 370 Nm of torque, enabling the MG EHS to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds.
The MG EHS plug-in hybrid SUV has a 10-speed automatic gearbox that combines a 6-speed gearbox for the petrol engine and a 4-speed gearbox for the electric motor. This allows the MG EHS PHEV to choose the optimal gear and switch gears smoothly and quickly, ensuring high efficiency and performance. The MG EHS also has a new intelligent hybrid control unit that analyzes the energy requirement by recognizing the road conditions and the driver’s behavior, and adjusts the energy output distribution and the battery level accordingly.
The MG EHS can be driven in three different modes: EV mode, Hybrid mode, and Sport mode. In EV mode, the MG EHS PHEV uses only the electric motor and the battery and can travel up to 52 km without emitting any CO2 (WLTP). In Hybrid mode, the MG EHS PHEV uses both the petrol engine and the electric motor and can achieve a combined fuel consumption of 1.8 L/100 km and a CO2 emission of 43 g/km (WLTP). In Sport mode, the MG EHS uses the maximum power of both the petrol engine and the electric motor and delivers a more dynamic and responsive driving experience.
The MG EHS plug-in hybrid SUV can be charged at a public (AC) charging point in about 4.5 hours with the 3.7 kW on-board charger. It can also be charged at home with a standard wall socket or a dedicated home charger. The MG EHS also has a regenerative braking system, which recovers the energy that is normally lost during deceleration and stores it in the battery, extending the electric range or reducing fuel consumption.
